Samaritans stories

Róisín's Story

“I’ve had depression and anxiety for most of my life. There was a time, at my lowest, that I turned to Samaritans for help.

They spoke to me so kindly and gave me the strength to take the next steps in my recovery. Since that day, my life has changed and improved so much.

With just one call, Samaritans helped me go from surviving to thriving.

If anyone is struggling and needs a chat, please use the amazing resources of Samaritans.”

Nathan's story

“I was always seen as the bubbly, outgoing one, always trying to put a smile on people’s faces. But that didn’t mean everything was always fine. Like many others, I went through times when I struggled.

And during those moments, Samaritans were there.

They were the voice at the end of the phone when I felt like I had no one else. Sometimes I called in tears, and other times I just needed someone to listen. I never felt judged – only supported.

Those calls helped me through the darkest moments.

Today, I’m in a much better place, and I’m sharing my story because I know how much it can help others to hear that it gets better. Samaritans were a lifeline for me once. Please call them if you’re struggling."

Laoċín's Story

“I've used Samaritans’ helpline a good few times in my life. Following some personal tragedies in my childhood, I have struggled with suicidal thoughts many times.

Often in my bleakest moments, I turned to Samaritans for comfort.

I would have died by suicide about a decade ago, had I not called Samaritans when I was in crisis.

I am indebted to Samaritans. If you find yourself in dark times and in need of light, please call them.”

Alex's story

“Most of my life, I’ve struggled with my mental health. At one time, things hit a real low point. I felt completely alone and out of options.

I didn’t know how to ask for help. I couldn’t bring myself to speak the words. But I discovered that I could email Samaritans.

That simple option – being able to write instead of speak – changed everything.

For the first time, I was able to put my feelings into words. I was able to be honest, without fear, without pressure.

Samaritans helped carry me through a time I didn’t think I’d survive.

That’s why I’m raising awareness for Samaritans. Because someone out there right now is where I was – and they need to know that someone’s listening.”
