The 24-Hour Challenge (NI)

Support my 24-Hour Challenge for Samaritans!

I'm taking on a 24-hour challenge to support Samaritans' lifesaving work in Ireland & Northern Ireland, and their mission of fewer lives lost to suicide.

All funds raised here will support Samaritans' branches across the island of Ireland to help them be there for everyone who needs them, 24/7.

I hope you can help me by donating whatever you can. All donations are processed securely.

Thank you for supporting me and supporting Samaritans.

CRAFTATHON day is here!

Saturday 23rd Aug
I've got my spinning wheel going. It's a little overcast outside at the moment so I'll stay in until it looks clear (don't want to risk having to scramble to get everything in if it rains).

I'm currently spinning up something I started awhile ago. It's AA blended mix I did on my drum carder of white wool from up the road and a little bit of light blue merino left from a small bundle of 'felting' wool from a craft shop. So there are subtle light blue flashes in the yarn. As always, it'll be hard to tell yet what the finished plied and washed yarn will look like. I have no plans for the this yarn so if you're interested, I'll post how much the finished skin will be. It's likely to be small because I only blended up one batt. We'll see.

Happy Saturday!

This Saturday 23rd!

Monday 18th Aug
This Saturday will be my Craftathon day! I'll be spinning outside (weather permitting) and crocheting and getting the pliers out to make some stitch markers. I might even pull out the pegloom and get some wool seat cushions woven. I'll be posting throughout the day (here and on Instagram @deardickens) what I'm working on. If you see something you'd like, send me a message and I'll suggest a donation amount for the item.

See you Saturday!!

A simple pattern

Sunday 3rd Aug
Currently delayed in planing my Craftathon by illness. Sometimes when ill, or depressed, focusing on crafting can be a difficult. That's when a very simple pattern comes in handy. The basic granny square pattern works up quickly enough to feel satisfying, is varied enough, but simple enough to be easily memorable. I have an idea of what I make with this granny square but who knows.

Crafting as Therapy

Tuesday 22nd Jul
Welcome! August being craft month and recognising the roll of crafting in mental health- I will be doing a 24-Hour Craftathon fundraiser for Samaritans.
For a long time, even before I realised it, crafting has been mental health therapy for me. In fact, looking at certain dark times in my mental health, crafting and creating were absent. Whether it is keeping my hands busy, the magic of creating out of raw materials, or making something to give to a friend or loved one, crafting has become an essential part of my life.
When I saw that Samaritans were running a fundraiser that wasn't running or biking or something other sport- it clicked! Yes, I will craft for charity- and crafting is mental health.
There have been times in my life when I have almost called Samaritans. Just knowing they were there, and a anonymous person would listen without judgement or their own self interest has greatly helped me. All I would have to do is dial a number (as much as I hate using the phone- lol) and someone would be there. Now, I know I have lovely family and friends- many of whom might be shocked to read this- but sometimes in your darkest moments, telling a loved one is too much. The weight of their reactions whatever they might be, the responsibility of their love can be too much. But someone on the other end of the phone- they have no past with you- no expectations. Knowing an anonymous person over the phone cared enough about people they have never and will never know, to listen and help as much as they can (we're all only human after all)- that is something special.
In a world that is getting increasingly harder, darker, and more and more unkind, selfish, and hateful- many people out there need the Samaritans more than ever.
Please, if you can, consider giving a little to help support them.
As a part of my Craftathon I will be making some things as gifts for donating. More details of this in the coming days as well as a proper date for my Craftathon. Stay tuned.

And thank you. X
